Bangladesh women’s cricket team missed direct qualification for the 2025 ODI World Cup after losing to West Indies. They will now compete in the qualifiers.
Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team has missed out on direct qualification for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup after a disappointing eight-wicket loss to the West Indies in Basseterre. The defeat concluded their campaign in the 2022-2025 ICC Women’s Championship cycle, leaving them level on points with New Zealand but behind on wins.
The final standings saw Bangladesh and New Zealand tied on 21 points, but New Zealand’s nine victories compared to Bangladesh’s eight secured them the sixth and final automatic qualification spot. Australia, India, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka had already qualified directly for the tournament, scheduled to be held in India later this year.
This outcome means that Bangladesh will now have to compete in the World Cup qualifiers alongside West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland. Scotland and Thailand will also participate in the qualifying tournament, with only two teams making it through to the main event. The third ODI between Bangladesh and West Indies turned out to be a disappointing affair for the visitors. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 118 runs in 43.5 overs. Sharmin Akhter top-scored with 37 runs. Despite being well-placed at 94 for 3, they suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their last seven wickets for a mere 24 runs in 13 overs. Karishma Ramharack was the star performer for the West Indies with the ball, taking four wickets for just 12 runs in 6.5 overs. Zaida James also contributed with two wickets.
In response, West Indies chased down the target in 27.3 overs. Qiana Joseph led the charge with 39 runs, while Deandra Dottin remained unbeaten on 33. Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter were the only wicket-takers for Bangladesh, taking one wicket each. Ahead of the match, Bangladesh had a chance to secure their direct qualification spot with a win against the West Indies. A victory in the final ODI would have put them ahead of New Zealand and guaranteed them a spot in the World Cup. Conversely, the West Indies were hoping for a series win. However, the defeat means that Bangladesh will now have to navigate through the qualifying tournament to reach the World Cup.
The final game of the International Women’s Championship cycle was the last chance for Bangladesh to secure a place in the ODI World Cup through direct qualification. The team’s performance and the resultant loss mean they now face the challenges of qualification rounds to secure their place in the tournament.
