ONGC Partners with Tata Power Renewable Energy to Boost Battery Energy Storage

ONGC partners with Tata Power Renewable Energy to explore Battery Energy Storage Systems, supporting India’s renewable energy goals and grid stability.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), a Maharatna energy company in India, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to explore opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sector. The agreement was formalized during India Energy Week 2025.

TPREL, a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, will collaborate with ONGC to identify and develop commercial opportunities across the BESS value chain. This includes a wide range of applications such as:

  • Backup power solutions
  • Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure
  • Energy trading through ancillary services
  • Grid stabilization services
  • Hybrid energy solutions
  • Industrial and commercial storage solutions
  • Microgrids
  • Renewable energy integration
  • Utility-scale systems

Strategic Objectives

The partnership aligns with India’s ambitious goals for clean energy and sustainability, particularly the target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. Both companies aim to leverage their expertise and resources to drive innovation and growth in the energy storage sector.

Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and CEO of ONGC, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives. He stated that the collaboration with TPREL represents a strategic step towards strengthening energy storage capabilities, which are vital for grid stability and the adoption of renewable energy sources. Singh also noted that by combining their expertise, ONGC and TPREL aim to contribute significantly to India’s energy transition and long-term energy security.

Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, highlighted the crucial role of Battery Energy Storage Systems in enhancing grid reliability, facilitating greater renewable energy integration, and supporting India’s clean energy objectives. He expressed the commitment to developing innovative storage solutions that will pave the way for a sustainable and resilient energy future in collaboration with ONGC.

ONGC’s Renewable Energy Vision

ONGC is actively expanding its presence in the renewable energy sector, aligning with India’s clean energy objectives. The company has set a target of achieving 10 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of its broader goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038. This initiative includes investments in solar and wind energy projects, as well as the development of round-the-clock renewable power capacity to meet sustainability objectives.

TPREL’s Leadership in Energy Storage

TPREL has successfully commissioned India’s largest Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, a 100 MW Solar PV plant with a 120 MWh Utility-Scale BESS at Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. This project demonstrates TPREL’s leadership in deploying advanced energy storage technologies and contributing to the development of a robust and resilient energy infrastructure for the nation.

Implications and Future Outlook

The partnership between ONGC and TPREL marks a significant milestone in fostering technological innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainability in India’s energy sector. By combining their strengths and resources, both companies are well-positioned to contribute to the development of a robust and resilient energy infrastructure for the nation.

The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and driving India’s energy transition towards a greener future. The focus on BESS technology is particularly important, as it addresses the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources and enhances grid stability.

The MoU was signed at India Energy Week 2025 in the presence of key dignitaries, including the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, and TPREL CEO and MD Deepesh Nanda.
