The Rik Mayall Comedy Festival in Droitwich Spa announces Greg Davies, Peter Richardson, and others as headliners. The festival runs from May 31 to June 7.
A comedy festival honoring the life and legacy of Rik Mayall is set to take place in Droitwich Spa. The community-run festival will be held from May 31 to June 7.
Headliners Announced
Several well-known comedians and actors have been confirmed as headliners for the festival. Greg Davies, Peter Richardson, Shaparak Khorsandi, and Helen Lederer are among the performers scheduled to appear at the Norbury Theatre.
Helen Lederer, who worked with Mayall on shows such as The Young Ones, Happy Families, and Bottom, will also be performing. Red Richardson, Paul Foot, and Laura Smyth are also confirmed for headline shows.
Festival Details
The festival aims to celebrate Mayall’s life and continue his legacy by supporting youth programs at the Norbury Theatre. Mayall grew up in Droitwich Spa.
In addition to the headliners, the festival program will include theatre performances, comedy for children and parents, panels, and screenings. Free activities for families will be available, and a pop-up museum will feature memorabilia from Mayall’s career.
A world premiere of ‘Serious About Comedy’, a film produced by University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute and the Birmingham Rep, will also feature, concluding with a panel headed by Sean Foley.
An open Fringe will take place at other venues across the town. A large portion of performances will be free and ‘pay what you want’ including stand-up, improv, theatre and live music.
Ticket Information
Tickets for the headliner shows at the Norbury Theatre will go on general release on March 9. Tickets were available for local residents from March 8.
Chris Broad, festival committee chair, mentioned the rare opportunity to see big names in such an intimate setting.
The Inspiration Behind the Festival
The festival idea came from a discussion with Mayall’s family and local councillor Richard Morris. The family suggested a celebration in the town where he found his feet in entertainment was a fitting tribute.
More events will be announced in the run up to the festival.
